STD is an abbreviation for sexually transmitted disease. Today, STDs are more commonly referred to as sexually transmitted infections, or STIs. An STI is an infection that is passed from one infected person to another through sexual activity, including anal, oral and vaginal sex. Some of the most common STIs are gonorrhea, Chlamydia, syphilis, genital herpes, and HPV (human papillomavirus). Many STIs do not have signs or symptoms, so a person can have an STI and not know it. Every sexually active person is at risk for contracting an STI, if a partner is infected. To help reduce your risk, you may want to engage in safer sex practices, such as using a condom during all types of sexual activity. The most effective way to avoid an STI is to practice abstinence—not engaging in any type of sexual activity. If you think you may have an STI, get tested. Being tested is the responsible thing to do. A health care provider can provide you with treatment if needed.
